Throughout human history, the literary theme of “just desserts” or cosmic retribution has been played to many different tunes. How often do we revel in the feelings of righteousness or triumph upon discovering our perceived justice was served to those desperately needing a full helping? In those of us with functional and robust empathic responses, do those initial feelings of elation or even happiness dissipate to pity or compassion at a measurable rate unshared by those with an empathic response that is impaired or perhaps absent?

At what point in our complex neurology do we stop and consciously dial down the flow of “I told you so” until it becomes “I am sorry this happened to you”, if even with the devil whispering addendums of “even though you deserved it”. Perhaps one day there will be a measuring apparatus to determine these small, and large, differences in our responses to witnessing tragic karma, and those who are good, who are better, will be the swiftest to abandon the arrogant sport of Being Right, and instead will bend knee to the tragically deserving in a greater effort to Be Good.
